The Mid Murray Council has appointed economist Dr Andrew Johnson as its new Chief Executive Officer, as the organisation moves forward with a new 10-year financial plan and a focus on long-term sustainability.
Dr Johnson will begin in the role on the 10th of August, bringing extensive local government experience including previous CEO roles with the Town of Walkerville, LGA Mutual and Port Pirie Regional Council.
His appointment follows Council’s adoption of its 2026/27 Annual Business Plan and Budget this week, which includes an average general rate increase of 2.9 per cent for existing properties – reduced from the 3.64 per cent increase proposed during public consultation.
The Council’s new Long Term Financial Plan forecasts continued improvements over the next decade, including an average operating surplus of 4.7 per cent, borrowings reducing to no net debt by Year 10, and continued investment in renewing community assets.
Mid Murray Mayor Simone Bailey said Dr Johnson’s experience in financial management, governance and advocacy made him the right person to lead the organisation.
“Following a comprehensive recruitment process, Dr Andrew Johnson stood out as an exceptional candidate who demonstrated outstanding leadership, strategic thinking and a genuine commitment to regional communities,” Mayor Bailey said.
The appointment comes after a challenging period for the Council, which was identified as potentially financially unsustainable three years ago.
Mayor Bailey said significant work had been undertaken to strengthen the organisation’s position.
“Since then, Council has worked incredibly hard to strengthen our financial position, improve efficiency and make the difficult decisions needed to secure our long-term future,” she said.
Dr Johnson said he was looking forward to joining the Mid Murray community and working with residents, elected members and staff.
“I am honoured to have been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Mid Murray Council and look forward to becoming part of the community,” Dr Johnson said.
Dr Johnson holds a PhD in Economics, a Master of Business Administration, is a Fellow Certified Practising Accountant and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
